are you misusing your awareness?

dear dope chick:

changing the conversation around awareness starts with acknowledging that we already have awareness.

lack of awareness is a narrative we frequently see + seemingly have no issues buying into; however, that story comes with one fundamental flaw:

we lack nothing.

we have everything we need to live a fruitful life, awareness included.

our misuse of awareness is why:

we feel stuck.

we feel stuck because we aren’t aware of the possibilities out there. based on our lived experiences, there may be a level of ignorance we possess toward certain experiences + situations. not knowing no fault of our own — we know what we know. however, we are responsible for our own growth. awareness, in this instance, can look like going into a situation with an open mind + a learning attitude.

we lash out.

we believe that our way is the only way + get frustrated when events don’t pan out as we planned. here, our misuse of awareness hinders us from indulging in different perspectives. there’s our way + then there’s a million more ways. inviting awareness is embracing different perspectives + nuances in life.

we are unforgiving.

how dare someone get over an incident without still feeling guilty about what they did?

how dare someone cause harm + not feel the wrath of anger for all of eternity?

at some point, we have to make ourselves aware of the fact that people are allowed to change. staying the same isn’t the aim of the game. giving ourselves space to grow + expressing radical forgiveness is how we bring awareness into our ever changing lives.

awareness is seeing life for what it is + determining whether or not you want to continue doing what you’re doing.

are you aware of the story you’re telling yourself?

that same ole story you keep telling yourself is why you feel stuck + unyielding, fam.

employing awareness is shifting the narrative, rewriting the story, when we don’t align with the direction it’s going.

take inventory of your thoughts.

  • what are stories are you telling yourself?
  • is that a true story based on fact or your point of view?
  • who are you + does that person inside match your actions?
  • if not, what can you do to change that?
  • by your own standards, are you allowed to change?

take back your power + be patient with this process.

when we’ve been on go, go, go for so long it’s challenging to understand the magnitude of power we hold in our thoughts + actions.

focus on what you want in life.

you can tell when your gut doesn’t fuck with it, so with what does it align?

bring your awareness into this day, into this moment, + grant yourself permission to be present, open, + accountable for the life you’re choosing to live.

be you, be dope!
