dear dope chick:
you don’t have to downplay your hobbies, fam.
you’ve been convinced that if it ain’t making you money, it ain’t worth your time.
that is simply untrue.
hustle + grind culture has done a number on us.
operating with this mentality has sucked the joy out of simply being.
life is much more than a rat race.
your value isn’t tied to your contributions or your ability to capitalize off of + exploit enjoyment.
you live in abundance, fam.
hustle + grind has acted as a pillar of support to operating with a scarcity mindset.
a scarcity mindset is highly contagious when we are unsure of who we are + in our innate ability to spread joy without expecting monetary gain.
likewise, hobbies are pillars of the abundant mindset.
exercising your freedom to do what you love + to love what you do is a different type of living.
it showcases not only having the idea of enough, but that you are + have always had enough + that includes time to pursue your hobbies.
be sure of yourself + secure in who you are.
get out there + explore life without inhibitions.
figure out what you like to do + how you like to do it + you do that by giving yourself space to live; you do that with hobbies.
participating in + having hobbies is a way to explore life sans the pressure to perfectly perform.
you may not know how much you enjoy roller skating until you go out there + bust your ass a couple of times while learning the basics of staying on the skates. stick with it long enough + you’ll be rolling in no time. shit, you might even find yourself teaching others how to do it.
let me say this: teaching others how to do something doesn’t have to be monetized.
monetizing our hobbies is when enjoying life starts getting dicey for us.
when you start putting monetary value on your ability to roller skate + teach others how to do it, you put an added pressure on yourself to get it right. after all, someone is paying for that service now. you can’t fuck up!
that’s not to say you can’t make money teaching someone how to enjoy the same hobbies as you — ask yourself:
- do i still have time to unabashedly enjoy this hobby?
- am i still having fun doing it?
- do i feel obligated to make money from this now that i’ve labeled this as a job now?
- what are my intentions for monetizing this?
- am i spreading joy while helping others?
go have fun today.
laugh, learn, get lost in enjoyment!
there’s no right or wrong way to live your life.
just as much as you want to make money, make sure your life is filled with moments that bring you unspeakable joy, too.
the time to live is now.
speak it, live it, be it!

i remember downplaying my hobbies because i was convinced that if they didn’t make me money, they were useless.
me simply enjoying them wasn’t enough.
that ends now.
what brings me joy is no longer negotiable. i decide how i spend my time. i take time to do what speaks to my soul. i am a walking embodiment of what it looks like to live life on your own terms. this is the freedom i’ve prayed for + i’m grateful to arrive at this place of practice.
be you, be dope!
