dear dope chick,

how you feelin’ today?
are you ready, today, to take some action?
what you’ll need:
for those who are new here, who haven’t been here in quite a while, or who have been rockin’ with me since day one —
dear dope chick™ is an action based podcast so that means that every single episode you are challenged to take one step that aligns with living life on your own terms.
that means you’re taking one step today, however small, large, or however you wanna categorize it, that aligns with the lifestyle that you most desire.
eenie meenie minie moe!
if you think your life is a game that’s on you.
yes, life is fun filled + exciting,
but ask yourself:
to what degree of seriousness do i want to take my life?
do what you feel is best.
honestly, you always do, but this time do it with more awareness, with more intention, + with more effort.
you owe it to yourself to steer your life in the direction that you’ve always wanted to go + you can do that for yourself today by taking action; by taking one step at a time.
let’s get to work!
so, grab a notebook or journal that is dedicated to this podcast so that you can participate in the activities and exercises discussed; to see how much you have grown over the course of your life.
have you heard our previous episodes?
not yet ready do the activities presented in this episode?
we have others that may interest you so if you aren’t familiar or haven’t heard our previous episodes, take a listen so that you can make an informed choice today.
you can listen to them here.
speaking of steps, let’s talk about today’s action step:
- this is a suggestion.
- this is encouragement.
- this is not a requirement.
i am putting this out here so that you can hear it + be inspired to do something that is pressing on your heart today.
to do this week:
with + without you knowing, the legacies of many live on within you.
these legacies can be found in all of what you do, too.
think about the way you style your hair,
what you have with your coffee or tea,
the way you cook + flavor your food,
the way you cross your t + dot your i,
+ the memories + commentary that floods your mind when you hear a song or a joke, or when you see a landmark, a picture, or a piece of art.
these are the legacies of others that live on through you.
today’s action is to honor our interconnectedness.
you aren’t an island, fam.
every thing you do is a derivative of something that already existed before your time;
all things are a derivative of a legacy is that now lives on in us from those with whom we are connected both directly + indirectly.
example or it doesn’t happen
you speak in that dialect because that’s what you’ve heard majority of your life, hear on a daily basis, or have decided to adapt because you heard it somewhere + thought it was cool. there may be other reasons, too, but you catch my drift:
even if you woke up one day saying, “this is the dialect i’m choosing to speak in from now on”,
even if you felt compelled within your heart to speak that way due there’s an innate feeling,
even if you had a conversation with someone else + only noticed then that you have a distinct regional +/or cultural sound when you speak,
you are living out someone’s legacy to a certain degree.
there is a level of influence over your life that may have prompted that switch up —
kids mimic cartoon characters often. as adults, i’ve heard many people speaking in different dialects after watching Game or Thrones or Bridgerton, most times for the fun of it, but the fact still remains they were doing it + it’s a derivative of a legacy that now lives in us from those with whom we are connected to some degree.
over the course of the week, continue understanding + uncovering the meaning behind why you do what you do by getting to the root of why you do what you do.
whose legacy are you carrying?
do you want to continue carrying that legacy?
more likely than not, you aren’t blindly doing what you’re doing for the sake of doing it.
at some point in your life, you were influenced by someone else’s legacy + now it’s a part of your daily actions that govern your life.
you’re drinking that extra mocha chai latte hold the foam because someone along the way introduced you to coffee. they may not have had all the bells + whistles in their coffee, but they did have a ritualistic way of drinking it that you uphold to this day.
if you’re like me + grew up in an area where watching march madness was seemingly a part of your school curriculum, you still may watch it with such fervor + excitement or you may like or root against a team because your parents liked that team + it reminds you of them.
though my parents grew on a farm + i was introduced to gardening early on in life, the legacy of growing food seemingly skipped a generation. both of my sets of grandparents kept farms + gardens. when i was a child, i can remember tons of rows of veggies that held peas, green beans, corn stalks, peanuts, cucumbers, tomatoes — honestly, you name the veggie + it was available to pick + eat on the land.
i also remember sitting on the porch + shelling peas + snapping green beans while enjoying listening to conversations from the elders.
though i wasn’t directly given information on gardening or horticulture, the legacy of my ancestors lives through my personal vegetable garden. my parents give me growing tidbits here + there, but the vast majority of what i do is innate, it is researched + learned, or it is directly connected to a memory either experienced by myself or shared with me by my parents.
the gardening legacy lives on through me.
i’ve shared before in a pervious podcast episode that my great grandmother was a midwife which i found interesting because i am doula. though i don’t catch babies, i still assist + aid in the birthing process by being a pillar of support to the birthing person.
the birth assistant legacy lives on through me.
when i first moved into our home, the lady who lived her previously had a beautiful floral garden. i could tell she put a lot of love into her flower beds, her flowering trees, + her well maintained landscape. her labors of love, her legacy, still lives on in the azaleas she left behind that we still tend to + care for.
+ while parts of her floral legacy persists, we have gotten rid of many of the trees as we have a different vision for our yard. her legacy remains as we also embark on a new journey of lawn care.
this is an example of both preserving a legacy + creating your own spin on it. both are coexisting as something new + fresh while also honoring bits + pieces of the legacy left behind.
i don’t believe in hitting kids as a form of discipline.
the legacy of getting popped stops with me.
i don’t subscribe to hustle + grind politics.
the legacy of working 10x harder to prove i’m worthy of existing or constantly grinding without adequate rest stops with me.
the reality is some legacies are meant to live on, even if that looks like a variation of its original form, + some are meant to be abandoned completely.
now is your chance to continue preserving a certain legacy or to create one of your own.
now is your opportunity to undergo transformation, to break generational curses, + to build upon + protect the cultural + communal traditions.
now is the time to mix + match, tweak, + stitch together bits + pieces of legacies that you want to uphold + newness that you want to usher into your life.
with each moment lived, with each action you take, you are honoring the legacy of those who have passed before you, those who you’re still rockin’ with to this day, + those who are still here, but estranged.
to what extent you honor the past depends on you.
my final thoughts:
who do you want to show up as today?
whose or what legacy do you want to continue to uphold?
you can’t help the way you were taught or the information you given at the time,
what you knew then may be way different than what you know now,
what you were exposed to then , you have been exposed to way more now
so your experience +/or take on life may be very different today vs. then.
but thankfully you can decide today which legacies continue +/or end with you.
journal work:
recall the origin story of at least three (3) things you do consistently + write about them in your journal. these memories can include:
how you tie your shoe
how you snap your fingers
how you write + remember your name
how you discipline your children or view disciplinary action
how you were introduced to your favorite candy
how you were inspired to get your first tattoo
how you clean + organize your house
… honestly, anything that you do! then, determine whether or not it is a continuation of a legacy or if you’ve pivoted away from what you were taught.
if you pivoted away from what you were taught, why didn’t you stay the course?
if you stayed the course, what makes you want to continue upholding this legacy?
understanding that you are interconnected really opens up a whole new world of living with people, of understanding people, of getting to know people because you know it’s not just you — you’re not an island.
the things that you do aren’t just what you do.
you’ll start to see + understand that so much of “us” is learned behavior + there are things that we can unlearn, legacies that we can leave behind, legacies that we can alter, + legacies that we can completely abandon that will help generations to come.
