dear dope chick,
welcome + welcome back!
how you livin’ today?
how you feelin’ today?
are you ready, today, to take some action?
what you’ll need:
for those who are new here, who haven’t been here in quite a while, or who have been rockin’ with me since day one —
dear dope chick™ is an action based podcast so that means that every single episode you are challenged to take one step that aligns with living life on your own terms.
that means you’re taking one step today, however small, large, or however you wanna categorize it, that aligns with the lifestyle that you most desire.
this is on you.
how you choose to live your life from this moment on is yours to own.
this is a huge responsibility.
thinking about the fact that no one else can choose for you how you’ll live your life + that the weight of that responsibility falls on your shoulders can feel like a daunting task.
it can feel very overwhelming especially when you aren’t used to making decisions for yourself.
start small.
do what you can in this moment that allows you the freedom of choice that sends you through a positive feedback loop —
okay, i’ve made this decision, now let me make another one,
+ another one,
+ another one…
until it becomes a part of your lifestyle to think + do for yourself, to be intentional with yourself in supporting the lifestyle that you’ve always wanted to experience.
you owe it to yourself to steer your life in the direction that you’ve always wanted to go + you can do that for yourself today by taking action; by taking one step at a time.
let’s get to work!
so, grab a notebook or journal that is dedicated to this podcast so that you can participate in the activities and exercises discussed; to see how much you have grown over the course of your life.
have you heard our previous episodes?
not yet ready do the activities presented in this episode?
we have others that may interest you so if you aren’t familiar or haven’t heard our previous episodes, take a listen so that you can make an informed choice today.
you can listen to them here.
speaking of steps, let’s talk about today’s action step:
- this is a suggestion.
- this is encouragement.
- this is not a requirement.
i am putting this out here so that you can hear it + be inspired to do something that is pressing on your heart today.
to do this week:
there’s no doubt that at one point or another in your life you’ve had a schedule to uphold + a timeline in which to adhere.
+ it’s likely you still do subscribe to those schedules + timelines to some extent, fam.
when you feel like you’re running out of time or that you’re lagging behind, stop + remember that you’re on pace.
you aren’t behind, quite the contrary actually.
allow that sudden sense of panic you have to get all of the things done to serve as a reminder that in this moment, you’re ready to start.
maybe you stopped,
maybe you paused,
maybe you’re veering off course,
maybe you’ve decided to pivot —
ground yourself in this moment + start again.
the task is done when you’re done.
there’s no need to rush,
there’s no need to berate yourself into movement,
all you can do is start + keep going.
today’s action is to make up for lost time by simply starting.
you no longer have to wish you had started —
start now.
over the course of the week, continue giving yourself time to decide what you’d like to do.
for many this is a foreign concept because we are so regulated by time that we feel we are wasting it when we take a step back + relax or take time to do something we deem as important that others may or may not understand.
when we aren’t promptly returning emails or available for phone calls, many of us can find ourselves apologizing to the receiver for an untimely response or for doing something else with our time besides communicating with them.
now why in the world anyone is apologizing for how they use their own time is beyond me, but i have done it, i have seen it done, + i understand why people can feel like they have to provide an excuse in that moment.
unlearning that is a part of my daily work.
not having to justify myself for my time usage is part of my unlearning. that means that I’m actively working to make sure that I don’t have to provide an excuse for how I use my time. I make sure before I speak I think about whether or not I need to apologize vs. what I’ve been programmed to do. I don’t want my habits to overtake my wellbeing. I want to move consciously in this world + make decisions that reflect my actual state of being, not the old me. so unlearning that is vital + is a part of the daily work that I do for myself.
fortunately, i do remember the days when people feel like they had more freedom with their time, namely when it comes to constantly checking in with others.
we weren’t glued to the telephone landlines we had at home. we had answering machines for that.
we weren’t constantly checking our emails. we used big computers for that + that means at home or at work only. no on the go checking + responding were taking place.
sometimes i find myself unintentionally reverting back to those times.
i barely keep a full charge on my phone so it’s constantly dying + when i do have my phone with some charge, I faithfully have it on silent mode or do not disturb.
i check emails when i check them — like legit sit down + say “oh, let me check my email” vs. seeing what comes in + moving on it immediately. if it requires a time sensitive response + i have the time to do it in that moment, i respond. if not, i don’t beat myself up over the inconvenience + do it when i can take uninterrupted time to do it.
i text back when i text back + sometimes there are days in between conversations.
i set timers for social media so i’m not constantly scrolling.
i honor the time when i’m connected + when i’m disconnected because both are a conscious choice that i’ve made regarding how i choose to my time.
you, too, can make decisions on how you use your time + you do can do that unapologetically + without a satisfying reason.
whether others accept when + how you move is a them issue.
no matter what you do or say, people will decide whether or not they want to accept + honor your choice.
that doesn’t mean you still can’t decide to do what you want to do with your time.
when it’s important to you, you make time for it.
you no longer have to rush yourself into getting something done before a certain time —
you’ve started now keep doing it.
you no longer have to question if you’re capable —
you’ve started, you’re doing it, now keep going.
better yet, don’t just start.
since time is gonna pass anyway, do what you do with some passion + enthusiasm, too!
my final thoughts:
it’s one thing to start + feel obligated to start or continuing doing what you’re doing,
but what does it all mean if you aren’t enjoying the process, too?
what does life mean if you’re only living to make a living + not living to live?
fair to say that the easiest way to make time your enemy is to act as if it’s working against you.
all things, including time, are working for your highest good.
be a friend to time by pressing forward + by doing what you know must be done.
you are not behind, fam —
you are on pace,
you are doing what needs to be done,
you have time.
