dear dope chick,
welcome + welcome back!
how you livin’ today?
how you feelin’ today?
are you ready, today, to take some action?
what you’ll need:
for those who are new here, who haven’t been here in quite a while, or who have been rockin’ with me since day one —
dear dope chick™ is an action based podcast so that means that every single episode you are challenged to take one step that aligns with living life on your own terms.
that means you’re taking one step today, however small, large, or however you wanna categorize it, that aligns with the lifestyle that you most desire.
decide today.
deciding that you want different for yourself is admirable, but isn’t the game changer or in our case, thee lifestyle changer.
living the lifestyle you most desire takes one more step: doing something different than what you’ve been doing.
deciding is the first step + it’s a critical step to take; however, your decision needs the support of your actions to make the intended impact on your life.
choose today to do what you know must be done + — also as well — do what you know must be done.
you owe it to yourself to steer your life in the direction that you’ve always wanted to go + you can do that for yourself today by taking one step at a time.
let’s get to work!
so, grab a notebook or journal that is dedicated to this podcast so that you can participate in the activities and exercises discussed; to see how much you have grown over the course of your life.
have you heard our previous episodes?
not yet ready do the activities presented in this episode?
we have others that may interest you so if you aren’t familiar or haven’t heard our previous episodes, take a listen so that you can make an informed choice today.
you can listen to them here.
speaking of steps, let’s talk about today’s action step:
- this is a suggestion.
- this is encouragement.
- this is not a requirement.
i am putting this out here so that you can hear it + be inspired to do something that is pressing on your heart today.
to do this week:
today’s action is to embrace your curiosity + to give yourself space to learn.
it’s the pressure that we put on ourselves that has us in a tizzy.
we think because of our age,
or because of our expertise,
or because of our upbringing
that we have to act, behave, + be a certain way;
that we are suppose to know things that we simply do not know.
we think because we are a certain age or of a certain maturity that we have to act a certain way.
you may see someone out in the wild that is acting unlike you’d expect because of their age —
- you’re too old to be acting like that
- why are you acting like that? why are they doing that?
- you’re too grown for that
- you’ve lived too long to be doing all that
it’s giving judgey. 😕
it’s giving why do you feel you know someone’s else life better than they do + why are your expectations they expectations they have to meet in order to live a full + rich life?
now, there is nothing wrong with you having preferences for how you want to do things, but piling those preferences onto someone is where we miss the mark.
because we feel like people should be doing certain things, or that we would do it this way or could do it this way so they should too, without giving people the space to learn.
if it’s something that we are not in tune with, now’s a great opportunity to teach, model, + show what we do + how we do without expecting others to show up in the same way.
we must give others the same space + grace to learn + do things the way they do them as well.
we also believe that we are incompetent to a fault if we make a mistake, or fail, or fall, or miss a step…
we think that shouldn’t have ever happened without realizing that it’s okay to figure things out.
listen, fam:
you deserve to give yourself unlimited chances to learn.
today, embrace your curiosity + give yourself space to learn.
you don’t know what you don’t know.
you can learn it now.
over the course of the week, step into each day with a fresh set of eyes.
regardless of the similarities it shares with your past, you have never seen a day like this before today.
even if it looks like the same experience, it is not the same experience.
unfamiliarized yourself with it.
let go of the preconceived notions you have about how something will play out or how this day will go + allow life to flow for you.
that’s the tea, honey!
i’ve made hot tea for myself more times than i can count + each experience lends itself to be slightly different than the last:
- most mornings i start my with tea, sometimes it’s in the late afternoon, sometimes i go months without it
- i’ve drank it from various mug designs, tumblers, + glasses
- i’ve filled my cup all the way to the top + sometimes i’ve only boiled enough water or milk to fill my vessel halfway
- i’ve spilled the water + milk when attempting to pour
- i’ve listened to the kettle to whistle when it’s hot enough
- i’ve run to the kettle to prevent it from whistling to not wake up my household
- i’ve also brewed tea using other methods + while i love loose leaf tea + the whole steeping process, i also enjoy steeping my tea from a bag
- i’ve drank different flavors from different parts of the world in different parts of the world
- i’ve use cream, date syrup, cinnamon, honey, cacao powders, a combination of the afore mentioned ingredients + others i haven’t mentioned or none at all
- i sometimes enjoy my tea with a breakfast, sweet or savory i ain’t picky — sometimes I like it with lunch, with dinner, for the hell of it.
- i’ve enjoyed it scorching hot, lukewarm, room temperature + even ice cold
get my drift, fam —
it’s tea.
never have i ever experienced drinking tea exactly the same way twice, ever.
the other day, i found a new flavor combination that i absolutely adore + that was because i was curious about a cup of tea + open to the possibility of experiencing something different.
so, no matter how many times you’ve done something, understand:
- you will experience something different every single time you pursue it — it may be the slightest degree of variance, but it’s still variance nonetheless
- that when you’re leading with curiosity you will learn something new from the experience when you’re open to learning
but what if i mess up or make a mistake?
making mistakes, if that’s what you want to call them, is part of the process.
a mistake is nothing more than an attempt at something different + realizing you ain’t vibin’ with it + wanna do something else instead.
essentially, it’s learning your preferences + at times, learning the preferences of others, that’s it.
learning your preferences may take time.
it may take multiple times to “master” the concept or to get it how you want it, but guess what?
you’ve got time to learn.
giving yourself a hard time will make your time here harder than it needs to be.
accept that you don’t know how to do everything + even then, when you learn how to do it, acknowledge that there are so many different ways to get it done.
my final thoughts:
the possibilities are endless!
there are an immeasurable number of ways to live your life —
pick one in this moment + then do it
+ if you ain’t feelin’ it, pick another
+ if you ain’t feelin’ that, pick another
when you feel content with the choices you are making, you can to continue making the same choices over + over while also noticing that nothing stays the same forever:
your feelings toward what you’re doing are gonna change
your intentions + reasons for why you’re doing it are gonna change
the conditions in which it’s based (think new laws, new tools, new interfaces, etc.) are gonna change
— there are so many different factors.
life is constantly changing, so attempting to force things to remain the same can have you feeling unnecessarily stuck.
imagine being stuck because your walkman breaks + you can’t listen to music.
there are so many ways to hear music now — live, streaming, CD’s, vinyl, but because you can’t hear the cassette you rob yourself of the music.
don’t be so stuck in your ways that you can’t see how different this moment is for you than any other moment you’ve experienced it.
today, learn to venture off into the variance + enjoy the moment for what it is + not for how you expect it to be.
even if you are doing the same things every day, give yourself space to experience it differently.
become a master in curiosity
mastering the art of learning takes practice; it takes persistence.
show yourself grace.
show yourself that you can figure it out.
show up for yourself in the way you’d want someone to show up for you — with love, with encouragement, + with support.
you’ve shown others that you are well versed in certain areas of life, now give yourself chance after chance to be a student, too.
sure you know how to file your taxes like a pro,
or how to pause + reflect before speaking,
or how to cook some of the best food a person has ever tasted,
but you aren’t done learning about any of those activities yet.
refuse to give up on learning, fam, + remember:
persist in your efforts + learn without inhibition.
there’s so much out there to take in + it’s not too late for you to start learning something new.
