dear dope chick,
welcome + welcome back!
how you livin’ today?
how you feelin’ today?
are you ready, today, to take some action?
what you’ll need:
for those who are new here, who haven’t been here in quite a while, or who have been rockin’ with me since day one —
dear dope chick™ is an action based podcast so that means that every single episode you are challenged to take one step that aligns with living life on your own terms.
that means you’re taking one step today, however small, large, or however you wanna categorize it, that aligns with the lifestyle that you most desire.
you can do this.
but it has to be done by you.
no one can want this more than you want it, but you have to do it for your own reasons.
you can do it for your kids, your spouse, your family, but the internal desire has to be there for you to do it.
what’s important is that you’re pursing it + doing it for your own reasons.
you owe it to yourself to steer your life in the direction that you’ve always wanted to go + you can do that for yourself today by taking one step at a time.
let’s get to work!
so, grab a notebook or journal that is dedicated to this podcast so that you can participate in the activities and exercises discussed; to see how much you have grown over the course of your life.
have you heard our previous episodes?
not yet ready do the activities presented in this episode?
we have others that may interest you so if you aren’t familiar or haven’t heard our previous episodes, take a listen so that you can make an informed choice today.
you can listen to them here.
speaking of steps, let’s talk about today’s action step:
- this is a suggestion.
- this is encouragement.
- this is not a requirement.
i am putting this out here so that you can hear it + be inspired to do something that is pressing on your heart today.
to do this week:
you can infer based on what has happened in the past,
you can speculate,
hypothesize,
+ you can assume all you’d like,
yet you won’t know for sure what can or cannot happen in this moment until it happens.
there are times when you may only see what can go wrong.
you may find yourself bargaining with God for a better outcome or find yourself worried about what you’ll do if your plans go awry —
newsflash: your plans may go awry
that’s a real possibility. 🤷🏾♀️
does that mean you do a full stop on pursuing your passion?
does that mean that you abandon the cause because it’s not happening how you want it to happen?
or
does that mean you let go of your expectations, accept what’s happened, + continue persisting in spite of what you’re currently experiencing?
today’s action is to remember how efficient you are.
whether things go sideways or are on the straight + narrow, you know how to adapt, how to maneuver, how to reroute, + how to adjust.
creativity runs in your bloodline.
it’s your birthright to be as creative as you are, fam.
it may not feel that way because your problem solving skills may need a workout.
the way to get better as solving problems is to actively solve problems.
what does efficiency look like?
efficiency can look like asking questions.
one of my favorite pastimes as of late is sitting down listening to the wisdom of elders —
asking them questions, getting to know them on a more intimate level, giving them space to share their stories + learning how their life experiences shaped their lives.
since there’s nothing new under the sun, sometimes they say something that’s very relatable to my current situation.
maybe at their age they had some of the same questions or were met with the same circumstances as me. hearing how they’ve overcome gives me hope + inspires me to keep pressing forward.
but I wouldn’t know to interact with them that way unless I sat down + asked them questions + curious .
asking questions can also look like seeking answers in books, reading scripture, watching documentaries, + quietly observing nature or your current environment.
asking questions also looks like trying things that are new to you:
eating different foods, driving through a different part of time, or switching up your communication style — instead of raising your voice in times of anger, you may choose to whisper.
what does that approach do to you internally? in what ways might it change your current experience? ask the questions + then seek the answers.
efficiency can look like expecting the unexpected + is flexible in life’s approach.
nothing is too outrageous for you. you walk into your days with gratitude + don’t allow circumstances to mess up your attitude. life is gonna life, you know, + there’s nothing you can do about what life decides to do. you can, however, focus on what you do to adapt to its circumstances.
for a full year or more, my family didn’t have a fully working car. we had one car that did work but for some reason, no one could figure out exactly what was wrong with it that kept it from passing inspection. we had another car that would seemingly pick + choose when it wanted to work so it was wildly unreliable. also, we were in no real position to buy a new or used car at the time + didn’t want to rush the process. so we rolled with it.
were we inconvenienced when our car would decide to stop working while we were out? to the naked eye, sure. but i’ve never not been handled with care + love. God has always come through with the come through, so my level of worry wasn’t there. i knew that we could figure it out. a way was always made — always, + i don’t take that lightly.
thankfully, we were given the opportunity to use a family member’s car, one they weren’t using at the time, which we gave back to them when we eventually sold our old one + purchased a new one. i’m grateful for their generosity + i am grateful that we trusted the process.
it’s not going to always go the way you want it to go. of course I didn’t want to feel stranded
efficiency is using time wisely + with purpose.
gone are the days where we schedule our lives out down to the minute. these days, i encourage you to welcome routine rather than to bog yourself down with a schedule.
picture this:
in the mornings before you start your work day, you have time allotted for quiet time. that’s your routine. however, what you have scheduled in your quiet time may vary.
for example, today you found yourself meditating longer than usual, but you didn’t force yourself out of completing the action because of time constraints + limitations. instead, you adjust your need + gave yourself the time + space needed to complete the task by maybe on the back end, adjusting your time somewhere else.
another example: say you give yourself 10 minutes to journal every day. instead of focusing on the time of day, you focus on giving yourself the time to journal. that may come in the morning, at lunch, at night — doesn’t matter.
one day, in that 10 minutes, you write 3 pages. the next day, one page is enough to express your thoughts + it takes half the time. you don’t have to force 3 pages out for the sake of quantity + time allotment, you can simply adjust your expectations + give yourself space to explore something else during that time — maybe brew coffee/tea, maybe prayer, maybe yoga, maybe affirmations, maybe stretching, or maybe sitting in silence.
all i’m saying is that you know what’s best for you in the moment + you reflect that with how you use the time you’re given.
efficient people know that their bottom line is their why + what they do + pursue aligns with their why
over the course of the week, continue redirecting your focus to your why.
when times get hard, remember your why.
when times are smooth sailing, remember your why.
when things seemingly get out of hand, remember your why.
when life seems perfect, remember your why.
remind yourself that nothing can keep you away from what is for you + keep pressing forward regardless of the outcome.
when you’re acting from a place of sincerity + intention, you are operating from a place of purpose.
keep going, keep attempting, + keep pressing onward until you’re experiencing the life what you want to live.
don’t worry about mishaps or mistakes or time breaks; those aren’t a real thing unless you make them real.
until you assign meaning to what happens in your life, it doesn’t mean anything.
what you see isn’t a mess up, it’s evidence that you are putting in the work.
what you see isn’t a mess up, it’s simply another way to go about learning.
what you see isn’t a mess up, it’s showing you where to redirect your efforts + focus.
until you assign meaning to it, it means nothing.
when you start assigning meaning, it will change your chemical makeup + may make you see things differently today than what you may see them tomorrow when you drop their perceived meaning.
my final thoughts:
it’s always for your good.
the lessons you’re learning are helping you better navigate your way through any challenge or distraction that comes your way.
you can employ any skill set you have in the moment to figure out what needs to be done.
keep your head up,
keep one foot in front of the other,
+ keep your heart set on your why.
you’ve got this!
