you can listen to it here.
you’ve already put in so much work!
first, you visualized the life you desire.
currently you are taking inventory of your actions + deciding where changes are necessary to fully align with your life vision.
today, let’s bring another component into this journey of living life on your own turns.
shifting mindsets + remaining present
if your current habits + behaviors have your in a chokehold + you find it hard to break free, it’s time for a mindset shift.
the exercise for this week’s episode will require you to embrace the following:
leave the past in the past.
the exercise for this week’s episode requires you to leave the past in the past.
you are not who you once were.
you are someone different now.
embrace that you are dope + that you have new habits, mindsets, outlooks, + view points.
it is okay to be different, sis.
ditch your expectations
it also requires you to ditch your expectations of who you will become.
you don’t know who you will become because you aren’t that person yet.
plus, who’s to say who you’ll become?
your current actions may take you down a completely different path.
focus on right now
focus on the decisions you’re making right now, today.
that’s what’s important.
the present you is who you are today + how you’re behaving in this moment.
and what better way to focus on who you are right than to make an “I am” statement, better known as an affirmation!
what is an affirmation?
an affirmation is a positive mantra. it is a conscious + intentional declaration of oneself that reflects how one views + feels about themselves.
“I am” + “My” statements are typically called affirmations.
you are a walking affirmation
regardless of if you are aware or not, you are speaking affirmations over your life all of the time!
Oh man, I’m so ugly,
I’m so dumb,
I’m so fat,
I’m so broke —
these are all affirmations.
now, they may not be words that you want to hear or have someone describe you as, yet you do it to yourself day in + day out — subconsciously spewing hate language about yourself.
be careful what you say to me
we have to be careful about how we speak to + about ourselves, internally + externally.
when we come for ourselves, we are giving universal permission to be treated in such a way.
as for me, ain’t no way in hell I’m going to allow someone to treat me less than what I think about myself. how someone wants to treat themselves is their own business; however, I’m not entertaining no shit that doesn’t align with who I am.
shifting mindsets is long overdue
one of the reasons we stay so long in situations that no longer serve us is because we have subconsciously programmed our minds to think we are only worth what others say we are + that’s likely because we haven’t done the work to say, “this is who I am” + actually live accordingly.
how you speak to + talk about yourself matters.
it’s important that you see yourself as the dope ass person you are, nothing less.
why not say words that uplift you?
why not say words that bring more positivity into your life?
why not say encouraging words that you want to hear?
why not say words that will have you looking at yourself in a different, more positive light?
instead of saying, “I am so fat, I’m so ugly” why not say “I am a beautiful human being”?
it costs you absolutely nothing to be kind to yourself.
let’s make a concerted effort to change the way we already think about ourselves.
how to construct affirmations
how in the world am i suppose to say dope shit about myself when I don’t even know how to write or speak an affirmation, P?
glad you asked.
start your affirmations with “I am” or “My”
I am + my imply ownership.
when you say, “I am” or “my”, you are speaking about something you are doing right now.
avoid using the following:
- I am not…
- I will…
- I want…
- I’m gonna be…
- I’m trying to be…
your tombstone won’t say “they were going to be a xyz person” or “they wanted to be…” because none of us have a clue about what is going to happen in your life, ma’am!
I am. My. dassit.
Remember you can change the course of your life at any time you choose so you speaking an affirmation over your life that you feel isn’t quite who you are now can force the change of how you see yourself.
keep them positive + present tense
I’ve also found that short + concise are easier to recite + remember, but listen: say what you need to say to convey the message you need to convey.
as long as you can remember the affirmation from memory, that’s all that matters.
example 1: “my complexion is clear + bright”.
tired of always nitpicking at my skin’s condition (figuratively + literally), i decided to write + recite “my complexion is clear + bright”.
constantly saying that got me thinking about some of the ways I could actively + naturally get clearer skin sans the dark circles.
the affirmation “my complexion is clear + bright” inspired + energized me to take action!
my new habits included going to bed earlier, drinking tons more water, + cutting back on sugar in general. before I knew it, my under eye circles started to disappear + my skin is so much more clearer.
what I’ve noticed is when you start improving one part of your life, other parts of your life are elevated as well. what you think is only affecting this part over here, you may find the change has a huge impact on other aspects as well.
in general, affirmations help me tremendously because when I say something about myself + stick by that,
saying it over + over again + not wavering,
not thinking twice about who I say I am,
it forces me to think twice about negating that declaration.
it evokes deep thought about the lifestyle choices I am making in the present + to act accordingly.
example 2: “i am creative enough to figure this out”.
one of my favorite sayings is, “I am creative enough to figure this shit out”.
no matter the situation, I am able to come up with a solution.
after reciting this, i am prompted to pause + think about what can be done.
I don’t judge the ideas as they come.
I don’t say “that’s dumb” or “why would I think that?”
nah.
instead, I allow my mind to think freely, to open up + to expand into realms of thinking I may not have visited before.
this is how I continue to elevate my way of thinking + to remain open to endless possibilities. I’m thinking differently to get different results.
example 3: “i am creating the life I choose to live”.
another affirmation I love is “I am creating the life I choose to live”.
well, it’s true for all of us.
we all are creating the life we choose whether we acknowledge it or not.
every single day we have to make a choice + we are choosing whatever we’re choosing + living out our choices.
that puts the responsibility + onus back on us.
maybe you are exactly where you want to be right now or you’re ready to change, but you get to decide how to proceed.
to do this week:
over the course of this week, write down 21 affirmations about yourself + recite them daily.
tip: you can break up the 21 affirmations into 3 affirmations a day!
these can be said whenever, wherever — in moments of weakness, in moments of uncertainty, in moments of triumph — say these dope things about yourself all the damn time.
more examples of affirmations :
- I am creative
- I am resilient
- I am persistent
- I am healthy
retrain your mind to think about yourself differently.
you are limitless.
you are capable of dope shit.
there is no opportunity to great or action to small for you to take today.
you have to believe this for yourself, though.
i can tell you all day, but it takes you believing you can change the course of your life + putting your beliefs to the test,
start now with what you have — grab the pen, sis.
you have the power + the ability to change the course of your life.
you hold that in the palm of your hand because you can hold a pen + you can write down thoughts about yourself that reflect yourself in a positive light.
you can do that.
there are things you may say that you might not believe about yourself just yet, but you can train your mind to believe every word you say by just writing down what it is that you want to believe about yourself.
life is happening for you right now!
don’t judge yourself for not being exactly where you want to be.
you are exactly where you need to be right now because if you weren’t here, you wouldn’t be making the changes that are necessary for you to be making right now to live life on your own terms.
if you were somewhere else, you are not coming to a realization right now that you this isn’t necessarily the way you want to continue to live.
understand the timing of your life.
understand this is where you are right now.
understand you don’t have to stay here.
though you are not your behaviors, you are currently behaving in a way that change the course of your life forever.
ask yourself:
is this the path i want to continue to walk?
from this moment forth, who am i?
