that doesn’t sound like something you’d say

ever opened your mouth + heard someone else’s voice come out?

not literally 😂 let me explain, fam.

you’re mid conversation + bam — a phrase, a word, or a saying comes flying out of your mouth that sounds more like someone else than yourself.

in those words you can hear your mother, your father, your grandparents, your caregivers, your mentor, your peers, a celebrity, an online personality, or even a meme, but one things for certain: those words are not yours.

the next time that happens, listen carefully to those words.

reflect on them:

firstly, are those words kind?

do they reflect who you are at your core?

are they appropriate for this conversation?

do you truly believe those words? if not, given another chance to speak, what will you say?

sometimes we think thoughts + say words that are not our own.

think about all of the songs that keep looping in your head, words you keep speaking, outbursts you keep having — subconsciously you’ve been influenced by your environment.

today, think before you speak + be conscious of what you consume.

intentionality is a choice which requires your full presence in the moment.

say what you mean + mean what you way today.

when we catch ourselves saying phrases or even doing actions that are like others we do not wish to mock or mimic, we must pause, reflect, course correct, + proceed with thoughtful dialogue + deeds.

after all, silence is always an option.

be you, be dope!

journal prompt(s) for today:

what words are you saying these days that have “randomly” appeared in your dialogue? what songs are looping in your head right now? what thoughts/songs/words are you consciously repeating? in what ways do you silence the noise?
